Recover Lost Data in 3 Steps
When a file is deleted or even the Recycle Bin is emptied, the info it includes is not really erased. Instead, the area it occupies around the disk or memory is marked as readily available for reuse. If you realize your mistake immediately, special undelete software will be able to recover an accidentally deleted file. The longer you depart it, though, the higher the possibility that your data will likely be overwritten, rendering the file lost forever. For this reason, it is advisable to act quickly to maximise your odds of success.
The file-recovery software we'll use is known as Disk Digger. However, don't download or do the installation until we indicate the way to accomplish that. Disk Digger is shareware, and although it'll let you recover files without registering, you'll get a nag screen per file before you give the $15 fee.
Recovering Files from External Media
1) First we'll demonstrate how to recover files from external media for instance a USB memory stick or maybe your digital camera's storage device. In this case, it's perfectly safe to download DiskDigger to your harddrive. Open your browser, head to diskdigger.org, click Download and Download now, then save the Zip file for your Windows Desktop. Double-click the Zip file and you will probably see two files: license.txt and diskdigger.exe. Rather than installing permanently on your system, DiskDigger runs using this .exe file; double-click it to perform it. Depending on which version of Windows you have, or whether you've WinZip or similar software installed, you might be motivated to extract or run the file - choose Run.
2) The opening screen shows every one of the disks, so pick the one containing your lost files and click on Next. Various option is presented. For now, accept the defaults by hitting Next again. Your disk is scanned and then for any deleted files listed; this can take time. If this works, and many files are located, head to Step 3. If not, click Back and select Dig Deeper. This time, when you click Next, you're shown more options; we recommend you accept the defaults and click on Next.
3) The files found might not be shown using their correct filenames though partial filenames or sector numbers, such as Sector 109450. This isn't valuable in identifying lost files. DiskDigger supplies a way of previewing the lost images or, for other file types, going through the initial few bytes. Select the file within the list around the left and choose the Preview or even the 'First few bytes' tab. The Thumbnail option inside the View menu can be useful; it shows small images instead of the sector numbers in the list. For non-graphic files, when the first couple of bytes don't identify your file, you might want to try recovering files speculatively and opening them within the relevant application.
4) Once you've identified your missing files, ensure they're selected inside list on the left and click on 'Save selected files...' with the top-left in the screen. Hold down Ctrl while you select each sector to select several. In the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box, select the folder this agreement you wish to restore the file (this should not be around the same device as the lost file) and click OK. The missing files will probably be saved with names such as sector546026.JPG, so rename them using more desirable descriptions.
Recovering Files from the Hard Disk
5) If your deleted file is in your hard disk, do not attempt to download DiskDigger to that disk - it could possibly end up overwriting the file you're wanting to recover. There are two possible answers to this predicament. The easier, but less reliable option is to download DiskDigger to some USB memory stick and other external storage tool and run it beyond this concept. Follow the process described in Steps two to four - in Step 2 choose the hard disk drive rather than external media, plus Step 4 decide to save the recovered file to a external device. This last point is essential - never do just about anything that can write in your harddrive before you're sure you have got your missing files back.
6) There's a level of risk coupled to the process described in Step 5, because there's a possibility that the application that's running - as well as Windows itself - will write to the harddrive behind the scenes. The safer options to modify your PC off on the wall - shutting Windows down will cause any settings to become saved to disk - and after that install the disk to a new PC like a secondary drive before wanting to recover your files.
