Recover Lost Data in 3 Steps
Recently, my six years old Maxtor boot drive became corrupted by way of a game and wouldn't boot. Although I did use a backup from the drive, and I could salvage all my data with Checkdisk, I decided it was a good time to buy a more moderen, bigger and hard disk and execute a fresh install of Windows and anything else. I found a Western Digital 500 GB PATA drive at Best Buy in Bel Air, Maryland to get a price I could afford and replaced my old C:\ drive with all the new Western Digital.
I've installed plenty of hard disks over the years but I've never replaced a boot drive in a system with multiple hard disks installed and Windows XP since the Operating System. I foolishly considered that Windows could be smart enough to detect that there was no C:\ drive inside computer and format and partition the brand new drive as C:\. I found out later that when there are more drives installed, the Windows installer will assign the following logical drive letter to the modern drive. In this case, my new boot drive became G:\ instead of C:\. Although Windows XP worked fine on drive G:\, I wanted in order to avoid future issues with applications that may have difficulties with a boot drive having a nonstandard drive letter assignment.
It was my hope that Partition Commander 11 from Avanquest would assist me to change the offending drive letter to C:\ and also merge the two partitions about the old Maxtor drive to create one big partition without losing any in the newly recovered data.
Getting Started
The very first thing you will notice whenever you launch this system is a reminder to make a Recovery CD that will provide you while using tools you should fix partitions as well as the Master Boot Record (MBR), and also partition and format a fresh disk before installing your os. With Partition Commander, I was able to easily Clone a Partition. Clone a Hard Disk, Create a Partition, Resize a Partition, Delete a Partition, execute a Simple Backup and change drive letter assignments for just about any harddrive except my boot drive, change volume labels and defragment my drives. This is just a fraction with the features available in Partition Commander 11.

I wasn't really surprised that Partition Commander couldn't change my boot drive from G:\ to C:\ because none with the other programs I tried could take action either. I was disappointed that there wasn't a less arduous solution rather than disconnect all of my other hard drives and reinstall Windows in order that it would correctly set the increase as C:\. Under the Multi-System Management Menu may be the Install OS Wizard but it can be a drop down menu which I didn't have a look at until I had solved the issue insurance firms only one drive attached when I installed Windows. It might have helped had I found it sooner but in any event, I still was required to reinstall Windows. At least my drive has become mainly because it should be.
I was pleased to begin to see the Help files available within the program but I could have liked to see a PDF User's Manual that might be downloaded and printed for easier reference.
Restoring backups completed with Partition Commander requires booting using the Recovery CD helping to make sense if your backup is of the boot drive but there needs to be a way of restoring a backup to a new drive from within this software without needing to re-boot the machine through the Recovery CD.
My biggest disappointment was that Partition Commander couldn't merge the 2 partitions about the old Maxtor drive. I contacted Technical Support and explained that there were only two partitions around the drive and that they were both NTFS but this program wouldn't merge the 2. The only thing they might suggest was that the drive was connected by USB understanding that was the challenge. I was able to use this system to backup your data to a new drive and delete the existing partitions after which create one large partitions and format it as being NTFS. Again, I got where I needed to go but there needs to have been a less arduous way of getting there. I think about the failure to merge the two partitions to be a major problem in the program. Everyone has USB drives for storage and backups now so there should not be any issue caused due to the fact a drive is connected by USB. The Partition Commander product page does state that it works with USB drives. Apparently it simply didn't like "my" USB drive for reasons uknown.
There remains a great deal to like about Partition Commander 11. It's easy to use and definately will simplify many with the tasks necessary to create, partition, and format a brand new drive along with protect data on your existing hard disks. There are a lot of different programs which will help you partition and format your hard disk drives. I think I've probably used a lot of them at some point or another but Partition Commander 11 can get the work done easier and faster.
Technical Support was tuned in to my obtain help, even though they couldn't give me a much better answer as to the reasons my partitions wouldn't normally merge. My 4-Star Rating is because with the program's failure to merge the 2 partitions on my small USB drive. Perhaps other users will not experience the same issue.
